Ōtzĭo Collezione 006, Quel Ciliegio d’Estate (“That Summer Cherry Tree”), draws from the story of Pomona and Vertumnus in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, reimagining the ancient myth as a modern Italian summer romance. The collection follows the Ōtzĭo muse as she travels through Italy, from the hills of Umbria to the shores of Sardinia, reading stories of love along the way: Pomona and Vertumnus, Paolo and Francesca, myths that blur the line between desire, memory and destiny.
Vertumnus, the god of seasons and transformation, disguised himself as an old woman to enter Pomona’s walled orchard, the place she had closed off from the world to tend her fruit trees in peace. One by one he tried to win her heart, until the moment he revealed himself in his true form. She, who had turned everyone away, fell in love. Paolo and Francesca tell a different kind of story, but the same one: two people who never looked for love, yet found it impossible to resist. Bound to others by duty, they surrendered to each other, and in Dante’s telling they remain locked in an eternal embrace that neither death nor time could undo. These are stories about love as a force that cannot be planned, refused or forgotten.
Ovid never tells us exactly where Vertumnus revealed himself to Pomona, but why not beneath a cherry tree, in the full heat of an Italian summer? That imagined moment is where this collection takes root. The palette opens with primary red, yellow and blue, accompanied by navy, mint and lilac. As the story unfolds, the colours shift into bright orange, fuchsia, lemon yellow, vivid green and the endless shades of an Italian sunset. Prints throughout the collection celebrate the abundance of Pomona’s orchard. Ciliegio is a cherry-red homage to the cherry tree itself. Il Giardino renders silhouettes of leaves, flowers and shadows, evoking the quiet intimacy of Pomona’s garden. Historical engravings of Pomona and Vertumnus are reinterpreted in saturated yellows, greens and blues, transforming classical imagery into something playful and contemporary. A further print revisits Paolo and Francesca, forever united in love and death, surrounded by flowers and suspended between literature, myth and memory.
At its core, Collezione 006 explores transformation: of seasons, landscapes, colours and people. Rooted in Ovid’s world, where every form carries the possibility of becoming something new, the collection reflects on love, travel and the memories that remain.
